Health Policy and Management Programmes

CURRENT POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES AND COURSES

Academic and Professional Programmes

The Health Policy & Management Department in collaboration with the other departments of the Faculty of Public Health and the Faculty of the Social Sciences in the University of Ibadan, currently offers higher professional and academic degrees in

(1)   Public Health (MPH, Ph.D.) with specialization in Health Policy and Management (HP&M),

(2)   Health Services Administration (MHSA, M.Phil., PhD).

The two degree programmes are similar in terms of their curricula and the knowledge, skills and competences which they impart. However, they are not identical. They differ in emphasis and in focus.

The structure of the MHSA degree is similar to the Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree. It focuses on the management and administration of health care systems and on private and public health sector institutions. It prepares students to work as health planners, managers and administrators in health systems and institutions such as hospitals, health maintenance organizations, health insurance companies and non-governmental health organizations and others.

The MPH (HP&M) on the other hand is broader in scope and in focus. It prepares students for careers in any of the specialties of Public Health as policy analysts, health planners and managers in the public and private sector, public health programmes and initiatives and in state, national and international public health agencies.
