On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI) inducted 27 graduands into the Medical Laboratory Science profession. The event, which was attended by members of the CoMUI and University College Hospital management, was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K.O. Adebowale, mni, FAS. In his remarks, the VC reminded the graduands of the profound significance of their profession. He observed that they are responsible for providing the data upon which 70 per cent of medical decisions are made. Echoing the thoughts of the VC, the Provost, College of Medicine, Professor Temidayo Ogundiran,FAS, reiterated the need for the graduands to be focused and diligent, knowing that the care and precision over every test and result can be the reason a patient lives or otherwise. From the comments made by the Head of Department, Professor Olayinka Omotosho, one can rest assured that the graduands have been adequately trained to perform their duties excellently and with a high sense of responsibility, and therefore be good ambassadors of the University and the College of Medicine.
The Registrar/ CEO of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria(MLSCN), Dr. Donald. I. Ofili, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Director, Dr. Akinola Olugbenga, acknowledged Prof. O. Omotosho for his commitment to and passion for nurturing young and aspiring members of the profession. He commended the University of Ibadan for its contribution to the field of Medical Laboratory Science. He specifically lauded the introduction of Rural Posting of trainees which brings them first-hand experience on the essence of the profession. He pointed out the relevance of Molecular /Cellular Biology which has been introduced into the department’s curriculum. He submitted that this is an indication of the alertness of the faculty to the changing environment in which the graduands will practice. In his charge to the inductees, he affirmed that with the honour of being inducted into the profession comes the huge responsibility to bring their expertise to bear on the medical profession. He emphasised that any breach of the professional guidelines will amount to misconduct and attract sanctions.
Two graduands, Agboola Ridwan Ayomide and Okunade Peace Oluwaseun bagged Fist Class Honours. The Valedictorian, Ridwan, celebrated his classmates for their resilience. On behalf of his colleagues, he appreciated the University authorities, CoMUI management, the proud parents of the inductees and the dedicated lecturers who made professionals out of a group of 27 greenhorns.
The Biomedical Laboratory Science Class of 2025 is christened Vencedores, that is Spanish for Victors.
