CoMUI HONOURS OUTGOING DEANS, DIRECTORS AND HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS (AUGUST 1,2025)

Every first day of August marks the change of baton in the administrative calendar of the University of Ibadan. Today was no exception, with new Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments assuming their roles in those capacities. The Management of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, set aside time to appreciate the immediate past officers and welcome those who came into office today. The Secretary to the College, Mr. A.E. Odedele, welcomed the guests and established the protocol for the meeting.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. T.O. Ogundiran, FAS, appreciated the immediate past Dean, Directors, and Heads of Departments for their efforts in institution building. He pointed out the sincerity of the CoMUI administration in hosting the event. He said it was not being observed as a routine but a candid show of gratitude. He observed the importance of these various leadership portfolios to the efficient management of the University. Enthusing the new officers, he declared, “ You can do this. If your predecessor did it well, you can also do it,  and maybe even better.” He then prayed for each person for the grace to perform their duties with diligence and excellence, all in the fear of God, reminding them that they are God’s representatives in those offices. He encouraged them to tap from the reservoir of knowledge of those who had earlier occupied those positions.

While speaking on behalf of all the immediate past officers, Prof. A.A. Odukogbe, the immediate past  Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, congratulated the new officers and the old guards. Speaking to his assignment at the event, he looked back at his tenure as Head of Department and shared some nuggets of wisdom. He spoke about the need for resourcefulness and the place of sourcing funds for the achievement of many of the tasks and daily requirements of the office. He charged them to find creative but ethical means of sourcing funds. He observed the need to find able drivers and assistants, as the new office comes with a lot of demands to attend different meetings, which may be called at short notice but would require representation. He admonished that the HOD most likely would find it impossible to be at all these meetings, but should endeavour to send able people to represent the interest of the Department at such meetings, especially where delegation of duties is possible. He touched on the importance of friend-raising, goal-setting, general goodwill, affability, and probity. He asserted that there are pains and gains attached to these positions. He admonished that one should count the leadership opportunity a privilege, and always remember that the future of others(staff and students) lies in one's hands and should not be handled with levity.

On behalf of the CoMUI, the Deputy Provost, Prof. S.B.Olaleye, again thanked all the distinguished personalities at the College Appreciation Ceremony. He labelled the Departments (and Faculties by extension) the most powerful units of the University. He observed that for anyone to emerge as Head of Department, the individual must be acceptable to his colleagues, must have put in the time and energy to be deserving of the position and must be a recipient of the grace of God. He urged the newly appointed leaders to familiarize themselves with the regulations governing the University as stated in the Staff Handbook, Students’ Handbook, Promotion Guidelines for the specific year under reference, and any other relevant gazette or records. He counselled them to be mindful of three nouns with the tion/sion suffixes – Promotion, Examination, and Admission. He observed that any HOD who navigates the waters of these three deep seas with integrity will be home dry and safe. He charged the new officers to be transparent, alert, and accountable.

The Financial Controller of the CoMUI, Mr. S.O. Ayansina, gave the vote of thanks on behalf of College Management, but not before chipping in the need for the officers to regularly consult the Manual of Accounting Procedure. The immediate past officers were presented with plaques as a show of appreciation for their distinguished services to the College of Medicine and the University of Ibadan.
