Biography:
Dr Lucia Ojewale is a nurse academic and researcher with a doctoral degree in medical-surgical (adult health) nursing, obtained from the University of Ibadan. Her research interest is on self-care education for people with diabetes mellitus, towards preventing complications and maintaining a high sense of wellbeing. She is also interested in exploring diverse issues faced by people living with other chronic/non-communicable diseases. She has experience using various research methods including quantitative (experimental, systematic review, cross-sectional designs) and qualitative (descriptive). Dr Ojewale has authored up to thirty publications including a book chapter. She is conversant with the use of SPSS statistical tool. In the last five years, she has sought collaboration with academic colleagues in other fields, and is open to more collaboration.
She was awarded the Mathilda Manuwa and UTC prices as the best graduating student at the end of my undergraduate studies. Her PhD programme, which she completed in January 2020, was supported by the African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship (ADDRF). She had the opportunity to undergo a three-month postdoctoral programme at the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, which was sponsored by the Harambee fellowship.
She enjoys teaching and mentoring students besides providing support to the alumni of the department towards achieving their career goals. She was the pioneer coordinator of the Open Distance Learning (ODL) programme of the Department.

Current Research
1. Title: Systematic Review of Clinical Guidelines for diabetes self-management
Funder: Becas Guadalupe under Harambee Africa
Brief Summary: This was a post-doctoral grant that provided the financial resources to undertake a three-month postdoctoral grant at the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona Spain. The goals of the programme were to establish international collaboration, develop new research skills, in this case, conducting systematic review using COVIDENCE.
2. Title: Diabetes mellitus in persons receiving HIV treatment: prevalence, burden, clinical outcomes and interventions towards promoting self-care using a mixed method design.
Summary: This project in which the data collection phase is about to commence seeks to determine the prevalence of hyperglycaemia and other cardiometabolic risks among people living with HIV in a large infectious disease clinic in Ibadan, Nigeria. The study would utilize a mixed-method design to further explore the experience of living with the double burden of HIV and diabetes mellitus; test an integrated care intervention for co-morbid HIV and diabetes and scale up the intervention within and outside Nigeria.
