Medical-surgical nurses are the backbone of general hospital units, providing comprehensive care throughout a patient's journey. Imagine a patient facing surgery – a medical-surgical nurse might be the one educating them pre-operatively, ensuring their comfort and well-being during recovery, and equipping them with the knowledge they need to heal at home. You are welcome to study in any of the programmes we offer in the Department and we are open to partner with you in all aspect. Thank you very much.
The Nursing Department of the University of Ibadan was established as a result of a recommendation by a World Health Organization Study Team in 1964. It was recommended and so accepted by the Federal Government that a three-year post-basic B.Sc. Degree programme in Nursing for Africa be established at the University of Ibadan with the assistance of the WHO and UNICEF. The three-year post-basic degree programme was to prepare nurse educators and nurse administrators of a high academic standing, who will be initiating and conducting research in nursing. On the acceptance of this recommendation, the programme became the first of its kind in Africa, South of the Sahara.
In 1965, the first set of students were admitted for undergraduate program and graduated in 1968. In 1970, the University assumed full responsibility for the Department. The five-year B.NSc. degree programme was introduced in 1995 and ran concurrently with the B.Sc until 2002. This was in response to the societal needs, professional demand and largely NUC policy that all professionals must undergo a five-year program in the university. The first class of BNSc was admitted in 1995/96 session.
In 1990/91 The postgraduate programme started with only one candidate who graduated in 1993 with MSc Medical Surgical Nursing. The Department of Medical- Surgical Nursing is being proposed as one of the new departments under the Faculty of Nursing for postgraduate studies. However, when the medical surgical nursing was a unit, it has graduated over 200 MSc and 20 PhDs.
