The Department of Maternal and Health Nursing is situated in the First Nursing Programme in Nigeria. The Department provides teaching, training, and research services in Maternal and Child Health Nursing. Our vision is to train and produce competent maternal and child health specialist nurses, capable of meeting the changing health needs of individuals and families across ethnic and geographical boundaries.

The Maternal and Child Health Nursing Specialty has been functioning as a Unit in the Department of Nursing University of Ibadan, which was established as a result of a recommendation by a World Health Organization Study Team in 1964 until in the recent past when it became a full Department. The Department has been part of the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme with focus on the Midwifery, Reproductive Health and Child Health Aspects. The Masters in Nursing (MSc) programme in Maternal and Child Heath (MCH) Nursing commenced in 2002 with four (4) candidates, and the PhD programme commenced in 2007 with one candidate. The first Ph.D. holder in MCH Nursing graduated in 2014. Over the years, these nursing graduates with higher level academic and clinical training have contributed to the critical mass of nursing professionals both in Nigeria and abroad. The department started functioning under the faculty of nursing in May, 2024.
Departmental Programmes: Presently the Department offers four major specialties which include: Neonatal Nursing, Midwifery, Women/Reproductive Health and Child and Adolescent Health
Academic: Undergraduate, MPhil, MPhil/Ph.D and Ph.D. We have seminars and workshops on regular basis.
Research: Areas of research interests available for collaboration include Midwifery and Maternal Health Care, Child Health Care, Neonatal Care, Gynaecological Oncology, Issues of Pregnancy and Childbirth, HIV/AIDS during pregnancy, Family Planning, general reproductive health Issues.
Clinical services: Maternal and Child Health Services, Community Midwifery and Reproductive Health Counselling and Services. Provide clinical support for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students.
