  1. The establishment of scientific foundation sufficient for understanding the principles of dental practice.
  2. The acquisition of adequate knowledge, attitude and clinical competence for the performance of various tasks and roles expected of a dental surgeon in the community.
  3. Impact leadership quality in trainees to enable them to lead the dental team.

History:

Founded in 1975, the Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine started as the University of Ibadan Dental School with technical assistance provided by the Dental School of Newcastle

upon Tyne.  It had only one department (department of dentistry) with Dr. J.O. Daramola, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as the foundation head of the department. The first set of dental students (19) started their clinical training in 1977. The initial aim was to produce highly skilled dental surgeons comparable to those in the developed countries.

It attained accreditation from the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council (NMDC) and National University Commission (NUC) in 1978.

In 1981, the Dental school was reorganised into 4 autonomous Departments (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology, Restorative Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry) with recognition by the Development Committee of Senate in 1985.  The pioneer Heads of these departments were Prof. J.O. Daramola, Dr. H.A. Ajagbe, Dr. S.P Luthra and Dr. Morenike O. Noah.

June 1981 was a remarkable year in the history of the school for the hard working and zealous trainers and responsible trainees when the 19 pioneer students of the BDS programme graduated.

Recognising the dire need for specialist in the various fields of dentistry, the residency programme for training specialist was introduced in 1983.

March 2002 was a land mark in the development of the dental school.  With expansion, more equipment, increase in staff strength and activities/functions, it was obvious the dental school could not be contained as a department under faculty of clinical science and Dentistry and it was accorded a faculty status with recognition by National University Commission (NUC).

This expansion led to metamorphosis of the Department of Preventive Dentistry into departments of Child Oral health and Periodontology and Community Dentistry in 2005.

Since then, the faculty has maintained till date the following departments:

  • Periodontology and Community Dentistry
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oral Pathology and Medicine
  • Child Oral Health

Dr. J.O. Lawoyin was the first Ag. Dean while Dr. Gbemisola Oke nee Aderinokun became the 1st Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) and Dr. A.O. Fasola the 1st Sub-dean (Undergraduate).

The Faculty has had the privilege to be chaired by the following Deans:
