Biography of Professor Adebola Emmanuel Orimadegun
College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI) MBBS Graduating Class of 1997!

Professor Adebola Emmanuel Orimadegun was born on July 7, 1970, in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, to Late Samuel Ademilopo and Late Juliana Omowejowo Orimadegun of the Abereowo family, Sajuku Compound of Ona-Ido, Ayetoro Ekiti, Ekiti State.

He received his early primary school education at All Saints Primary School, Atikori, Ijebu-Igbo, from 1976 to 1980, and then transferred to the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Ayetoro Ekiti, Ekiti State, from 1980 to 1981, because his parents believed that the quality of education in Ekiti State was superior at that time. He then attended Ayetoro-Iloro High School in Ayetoro Ekiti, Ekiti State, from 1982 to 1987. He studied at the Institute of Basic and Advanced Science of the Kwara Polytechnic Ilorin for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) from 1988 to 1990, earning distinctions in all three subjects at the advanced level, which earned him admission to study medicine and surgery at the prestigious University of Ibadan in 1990. He received his MBBS degree in 1997 and served as a House Officer at the University College Hospital Ibadan from 1997 to 1998. He accomplished his NYSC from 1998 to 1999 at a General Hospital in Ikara, Kaduna State.

Professor Orimadegun had his residency training in the Department of Paediatrics at the University College Hospital, Ibadan from 2000 to 2006 and was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in April 2006.  During his residency training, he also pursued and completed a Master's degree in Epidemiology, receiving the MSc Epidemiology degree in 2005. He worked as a Hospital Consultant at University College Hospital, Ibadan in the Department of Paediatrics for 14 months in 2007 and 2008 before joining the University of Ibadan as a Research Fellow I on March 13, 2008. He earned a Master of Science degree in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, which he completed with distinction in 2013. He obtained a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Ibadan in 2017. Professor Orimadegun rose through the ranks, becoming a Senior Research Fellow in 2011, a Reader in 2014, and a professor in 2017, and gaining a PhD in Epidemiology the same year.

Professor Orimadegun has received various research funding, notably from TETFUND through the University of Ibadan, Malaria Consortium, Williams and Flora Hewlet Foundation, WHO, Management Sciences for Health (MSH), USAID, the Institute of Education in the United States, APHRC, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has also garnered international recognition with trip funds from major organisations such as WHO, APHRC, Keystone Symposia and the Institute of Education in the United States. His expertise is in high demand worldwide, and he has acted as an external examiner for several universities in Nigeria and abroad, including the University of Cape Town in South Africa and Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands.

Professor Orimadegun has over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications and book chapters, as well as a large citation profile. As of January 30, 2024, his Google Scholar citation index was 2225, with an h-index of 28 and an i10index of 57.

He has supervised 15 resident doctors who have earned a Professional Fellowship from either the West African College of Physicians or the National Postgraduate Medical College in Paediatrics, as well as 30 Master degree candidates, two MPhil candidates, and a PhD candidate. Some of the students they supervised went on to become Readers. Some of his papers have helped to shape global policies on malaria treatment and neonatal care. He is a resource person for the West African College of Physicians. He teaches and examines for the primary, part I, and part II fellowship examinations.

Professor Orimadegun has received numerous awards and accolades for his outstanding work, including the prestigious "best Nigerian Paediatrician Researcher of the Year 2022" award from the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) for outstanding contributions to maternal and child health in the subregion. His dedication to medical teaching and research is unwavering, as evidenced by his positions on many boards of organisations, university, and hospital committees, including University of Ibadan’s Senate Development Committee, the College of Medicine Curriculum Committee, and the University College Hospital Research Committee as Chairman as well as international organisations such as the World Health Organisation and Friesland Campina Institute.

He is a member of many learned societies including Paediatric Association of Nigeria, and Nigeria Medical Association. Since 2019, he has served on the board of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. He also serves as an elected member of the University of Ibadan Health Services. His work with the Institute of Child Health, as well as his leadership role in child health research and education, demonstrate his enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring.

Professor Orimadegun is married to Dr. Bose Etaniamhe Orimadegun of the Chemical Pathology Department, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

He is a proud father of two children who are making important contributions to their respective fields. His life and work demonstrate his devotion to improving child health as well as to medical education and research in Nigeria and beyond.
