 Biography

I am a Chemical Pathologist with interest in biochemical and nutritional markers of chronic diseases and cancers especially the prostate, breast and thyroid. I believe that our diet and immunology have prominent roles to play in the pathogenesis and amelioration of chronic diseases. To this end I have looked at the roles of free radicals and trace metals, vitamins and lipids in these diseases. I have examined some of the biomarkers of these diseases in relation to disease management and progression with some interesting outcomes. My interest in Nuclear Medicine stems from the endocrinology aspect as it relates to radioactive iodine management of benign thyroid diseases such as Graves’ and well differentiated thyroid cancer. The need for health insurance due to non -affordability of the cost of therapy in most of the patients has also been highlighted.

Research

RESEARCH INTEREST: Nutrition and Metabolism/Nuclear Medicine

Completed

Immunology of Acute and Chronic Diseases and Cancer

1.Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) level in metastatic breast cancer.

2.Acute phase protein, trace elements and asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infection in Nigerians.

3. Immunoglobulin Classes and Acute phase proteins in Nigerian Women with Recurrent Abortion

4. Tumour markers usefulness.

5.Non specific cell mediated immunity in Nigeria children with uncomplicated malaria.

6.Acute phase proteins in treated and newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis

7.Screening for recurrent breast cancer using radionuclides.

8. Trace metals in Diabetes Mellitus.

9.Effect of peptic ulcer drugs on liver function.

10.Distinguishing Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) from prostate cancer.

11.Radioiodine usefulness in thyroid diseases management

Pathogenesis of Nephropathy

1.Microalbuminuria In type 2 Diabetic patients

2.Determinants of hypertension in pregnant Women attending Antenatal care

3.Prevalence of target organ damage in newly diagnosed Nigerian with hypertension

These studies resulted in Publications

Sickle cell disease

1. Assessment of liver failure in Sickle Cell Disease using Coagulation Studies and Liver enzymes.

2. The role of Vitamin D and Calcium in the Pathogenesis of Prostate and Breast cancer.

3. Vitamin has been termed protector of the cell division in vivo and calcium controller. The role of diet, animal protein and dairy intake in modulating Vit. D and calcium is being examined in a case control manner to unravel the likely interaction in the pathogenesis of cancers of the breast and prostate.

In –Progress

1. Iron deficiency Anaemia, lead and cognitive function in Children.

Iron deficiency has been linked to poor cognitive function in growing children, this work examines iron level in circulation and storage, thyroid function and nutritional status in relation to performance of defined tests of intelligence among children in primary school aged 5 to 10years. This is a multidisciplinary research involving a Psychologist, a paediatric Neurologist, a Heamatologist, and a Microbiologist. All samples have been collected while analysis is still on-going

  Dissertation and Thesis

1. CEA level in metastatic breast cancer (Thesis presented to Chemical Pathology in part fulfillment of the award of MSc degree in Chemical Pathology Nov 1998)

2. Prevalence of Microalbuminuria in type 2 diabetics at the University College Hospital Ibadan. (Part II dissertation of the West African College of Physician1999 June).

3. Adequate duration and modality of Follow for Patients treated with Iodine -131 for differentiated thyroid cancer(Research report submitted for MSc.( Med) In Nuclear Medicine Wits University Johannesburg 2008
