Details of Teaching Experience at University Level Lecturer 1, Department of Paediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. September 2012 till date a) Teaching Lectures to undergraduate medical students My involvement with teaching dates back to June 2010 when I was asked to help in giving lectures while working as a Hospital Consultant with the University College Hospital, Ibadan. I gave didactic Lectures to undergraduate medical students on the following topics: -Upper Respiratory Tract Infections -Bronchietasis, Lung abscess and Pleural effusion Then later on the exit of the then Paediatric Endocrinologist in February 2011, I started to give Lectures to medical students on the following topics: - Growth and Disorders of growth - Introduction to Paediatric Endocrinology, hypothalamo-pit- target organ axis - Thyroid disorders - Adrenal function and disorders - Diabetes mellitus in children - Calcium and Vitamin D metabolism and Rickets Since my appointment as Lecturer I in Paediatrics, I have given regular core lectures to undergraduate medical students covering the following topics in different aspects of Paediatric Endocrinology and Genetics: - Growth and Disorders of growth - Introduction to Paediatric Endocrinology, hypothalamo-pit- target organ axis - Thyroid disorders - Adrenal function and disorders - Diabetes mellitus in children - Calcium and Vitamin D metabolism and Rickets - Genetics overview - Congenital disorders and endocrine disruptors Seminars I take turns with other lecturers in the Department in presiding over social paediatric seminars which highlights the importance of socioeconomic and psychosocial issues in childhood diseases. Clinical Teachings Bedside teachings and tutorials · Case presentations and the art of history taking, examination and evaluation. · Instruments used in Paediatrics and the interpretation of Laboratory reports · Demonstration of illustrative cases at weekly endocrinology clinics Postgraduate teaching I am currently the only Paediatric Endocrinologist in the Hospital and hence I am in charge of building the relatively upcoming endo/genetics unit. I take turns with other lecturers in the Department to give lectures to Postgraduate resident doctors in the field of Endocrinology and genetics. I give didactic lectures to resident doctors at the courses organized by the West African Postgraduate Medical College in the Department of Paediatrics and Family Medicine. I am the coordinator of the first joint National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and West African College of Physician update course in Paediatric Endocrinology which took place in July 2012 in Ibadan. I was a facilitator at the first Growth in Practice course that took place in April 2010 at the Gertrude’s hospital, Nairobi Kenya. I was in charge of the Pre and post tests (including discussions around the questions) and also I was involved with the hands on training of the Doctors , nurses and other health professionals that attended the course on how to properly do anthropometric measurements (head circumference, lengths/heights, arm span etc) I am currently coordinating a Diabetics–in-practice course that is being sponsored by the International Society for Paediatrics and Adolescent Endocrinology (ISPAD). It would hold in the second quarter of the year 2013. I am a local tutor to the Paediatric Endocrinology training center for West Africa (PETCWA) based in Lagos University Teaching Hospital(LUTH) in Lagos state. I am, together with other Lecturers in College of Medicine, currently supervising 5 residents in executing their thesis for various professional exams. I am an abstract reviewer for the joint meeting of all Paediatric Endocrinology societies ESPE-PES-APEG-APPESS-ASPAE-JSPE-SLEP coming up in September 2013 in Italy. I also reviewer for IMRAT.

Researches

a)   Completed

i.    Febrile seizures in Ibadan.  This study assessed the prevalence, underlying etiological factors and short term prognosis of children who present with febrile seizures at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over an 11 month period .

ii.   ICGV project. It was a project funded by Welcome trust. It was a study that focused on looking at the impact of maternal malaria and early infant growth pattern on cardiovascular development at 2 years of age, and to explore whether changes in insulin, the IGF axis and inflammatory markers in the infant are potential mediators of such relationships. It was carried out over a four year period.

iii. Clitoral and penile sizes in Nigerian newborn in Ibadan. This study aimed at creating useful normative data of Clitoral and penile sizes in the newborn that would serve as useful tools during routine neonatal examination making it possible to diagnosis disorders of sexual differentiation prompting.

iv. Pattern of Paediatric Endocrine Disorders and Challenges of Management in a developing economy. This study assessed the prevalence of paediatric endocrine cases that presented between 2002 and 2009. It is a retrospective observational study

v.   Comparative analysis of blood glucose readings using different glucometers and how they vary with laboratory values. The study set out to evaluate the accuracy of two commonly used glucose meters in our hospital, Accucheck and One touch, compared to standard laboratory based glucose oxidase method and the effect of haematocrit from birth to fifteen years.

i.   Pattern and incidence of congenital disorders in Ibadan. The study sets out to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of congenital disorders amongst children presenting in UCH, Ibadan, Nigeria.

ii.  Ultrasonographic sizes of thyroid glands of newborns in Ibadan.

iii. Vitamin D levels in Mother-baby pairs in Ibadan, Nigeria.

iv. Neonatal tetanus in Ibadan: a ten year review.

v.  Bone ages and growth patterns in sickle cell anaemia patients in Ibadan.

vi. Incidence of microalbuminemia in Type 1 Diabetic patients in Ibadan.

vii. Prevalence of long term complications amongst paediatric patients with Diabetes 
mellitus.

viii. Newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism in Nigeria: a pilot study.

ix. Carotid intima media thickness in Paediatric type 1 diabetic patients at the UCH and LUTH.

x.   Prevalence of obesity in adolescent secondary school students in a local government area in Lagos state.

b)   Dissertations and Thesis

Febrile seizures as seen in the Children emergency room of the University College Hospital Ibadan. Dissertation presented and successfully defended at the National Postgraduate Medical College Fellowship examinations in 2007 

Clitoral and penile sizes in healthy Nigerian newborns. Dissertation presented and successfully defended at the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology, Paediatric endocrinology training center for Africa (PETCA) examinations in 2010.
