Laboratory Experience

Cell culture (monolayer and suspension), virus culture and infectivity assays, anti-viral drug assays, enzyme immunoassays, gel diffusion tests, complement fixation test, haemagglutination test, haemagglutination-inhibition test, haemadsorption test, virus neutralization tests, immunoflourescence tests, immunoblotting technique, DNA & RNA isolation and purification, Southern blotting, Northern blotting, in-situ hybridization, PCR, cDNA cloning, DNA sequencing, heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA), lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine assays, histo-chemistry and histopathology, negative staining and immune-electron microscopy. The 2nd HIV recombinant form (CRF02) was first isolated and characterized by me during my Fogarty International Research Fellowship programme at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA. Sept. 1990 - Sept. 1992. This virus strain that was named IbNg (for Ibadan Nigeria) has been shown to be the predominant strain circulating in West Africa and a good candidate for development of vaccine in the region.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS/CONTRIBUTION TO THE VISION OF UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

AS DEAN OF FACULTY OF BASIC NEDICAL SCIENCES

Establishment of the UniIbadan conference of biomedical research as part of my Faculty’s contribution to the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the University of Ibadan in 1998, we organized a conference tagged “Unibadan Biomedical Conference”. This conference, which attracted participants in biomedical sciences and related fields in universities all over the country and abroad, was organized twice during my tenure as dean and is now fully established as a biennial conference. The conference has created a platform for young Scientist within the country to show case their work, learn new ideas and establish networks required for career growth in their various fields. It has become a flagship conference in the University of Ibadan and some other Faculties have followed suit. Most of the funds for the maiden conference were sourced from organizations and philanthropists in the country.

Establishment of the e-Learning center

Training at the university level in the 21st century requires a shift toward self-learning and therefore the need to provide access to information, teaching materials and other references that are available online to our students. We identified this need during my deanship and decided to fill the gap. With part of the funds saved over the first 3 years of my tenure, we established an e-learning center at the preclinical units of the Faculty. A total of 40 computers, 40 computer desks, 4 air conditioners and Internet access were provided in the center.

Training support for academic staff

We part sponsored some junior faculty for training abroad to complete Ph.D. bench work.

Purchase of Equipment

Faculty funds were used to buy teaching equipment for some departments.

AS HEAD OF DEPARTMENT/ACADEMIC STAFF/RESEARCHER

Isolation and characterization of a new HIV-1 strain -IbNg

Working as a researcher with my colleagues at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA where I did my post-doctoral program as a Fogarty International Research Fellowship isolated a new strain of HIV-1 in 1991. This unique strain of HIV was named ‘IbNg’ (for Ibadan Nigeria were the sample was collected). This strain of the virus which is also called CRF02 is the predominant strain found in West Africa and is being considered as a vaccine candidate for the region.

Modernization/Rehabilitation/Revitalization of the Department of Virology

In 1994 when I was appointed for the first time as acting Head of the Department of Virology, the department was in a deplorable state, as was the situation with most other units in the University at that time. Today, the face of the department has completely changed and has been elevated to enviable position within the university. With funds from grants the department was renovated (tilled, painted, air conditioners for labs etc.), state of the art equipment and backup generators provided. During my tenure as Head of Department (1998-2001), we took a decision to accumulate funds allocated to the department from postgraduate school for a period to be able to purchase good equipment as needed by the department for teaching and research. This has become the practice in the department till date and a couple of equipment have been bought through this means. The Department of Virology has been transformed from a unit with few equipment for classical laboratory techniques to a state-of-the-art laboratory with up to date facilities for serology, molecular virology including genetic analyzer for DNA sequencing, cytometry, etc.

Faculty Development Programs

With support from NIH training grants, I have spearheaded and coordinated at university level various faculty development workshops including, Responsible conduct of Research, Grants writing, Manuscript writing, Research methodology. Many academic staff in the College of Medicine as well as related Faculties in the University (Science, Veterinary, Pharmacy, Agriculture) has benefited from this program.

Building for Highly Pathogenic Agents

As a member of the Presidential Committee on Avian Influenza, I lobbied for the establishment of a special pathogen laboratory from the Federal Ministry of Health. This building has since been completed with funding from the World Bank.

As Laboratory Director, I led a team of well-motivated academic and technical staff of the Department of Virology University of Ibadan/University College hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria through the WHO AFRO for the SLIPTA laboratory program and the SANAS laboratory quality cerfication program for ISO 15189 (2018).
