 Brief Biography:

Dr Gbemisola Aderemi OKE is a Professor of Community Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

She got her BDS degree from the University of Ibadan, got her master’s degree in Public Health from the University of California, USA, and earned a PhD in Epidemiology from the Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan. She is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) in Community Dentistry and a Consultant Community Dentist to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

A pioneer head of the Department of Periodontology and Community Dentistry (1995-1998), and Director, Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Ibadan (2010 - 2015), she became the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Ibadan from 2015 to 2017.

Professor Oke was the initiator and team leader who established both the Idikan and Igboora Dental Community Programmes in 1987 and 2010, respectively. The clinics have since served the immediate and surrounding communities, providing basic primary oral health services as well as ground for both undergraduate and postgraduate students’ training.

Professor Oke has provided consultancy services for numerous organizations on critical public health issues such as the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) on the review of “Standing Orders”, and Integrating Oral health into PHC; UNDP on Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS into Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP) in Ondo and Niger States (2009 – 2010); UNDP/NACA on HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, Response, Prevention, and Strategy (ERPS); and a WHO Expert Consultant on NOMA to Sokoto (2004).

Professor Oke is an International Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the Third World Academy of Women in Science. She is also a member of the Society of Women and AIDS member in Africa and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).

The Community Oral Health Programme in Idikan and Igboora was founded under my leadership to give oral health care services to people at the grassroot level.
