Biography:

Folashade Omokhodion,  MBBS (Ibadan), PhD (Lond), FFOM (UK), FFPH (UK), FWACP is a Professor of Community Medicine and Occupational Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and Honorary Consultant Community and Occupational Physician to the University College Hospital, Ibadan.  She is a Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Medicine. She is currently Head of the Department of Occupational Health and Safety at the University College Hospital and Chair of the Health and Safety Committee of the Hospital.

She has worked as consultant to industries and international agencies. She served as Research Adviser to Shell Petroleum Development Company, Nigeria, Country Coordinator for the Dreyfus Health Foundation (NY, USA) program in Nigeria and Short term Consultant for the World Bank.  She is a member of the Disease Control Priorities Network based at the University of Washington, Seattle. She was Visiting lecturer to the Department of Public Health, University of Kuopio, Finland and a Visiting Professor to the Occupational Medicine program at the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

She is Editor-in Chief, Occupational and Environmental Health Journal- the Journal of the Society of Occupational Health Physicians of Nigeria and Associate Editor, Frontiers in Toxicology: Occupational Toxicology. She is a member of the International Commission on Occupational Health Working Committee on Demographic Changes and Occupational Health and Member of the Education Committee of the International Occupational Medicine Societies.

She has supervised over 60 MPH, PhD and Fellowship trainees and has been a resource person for Research Methods and Occupational Medicine at the West African College of Physicians and for the annual short course in Occupational health for doctors and nurses organized by the Department of Community Medicine for over 20 years.  She was chair of the Curriculum review for the Residency programme in Community Health of the West African College of Physicians and the Chair of the Committee to develop a new curriculum for residency training in Occupational Medicine at the West African College of Physicians.  

She is a recipient of several grants to conduct research in Occupational Health and Women’s Health. Her research in Occupational Health spans 3 decades, focusing on occupational toxicology particularly on heavy metals, child labour, noise induced hearing loss, musculoskeletal disorders especially low back pain in the workplace and health problems of workers in the Informal sector with implementation of appropriate workplace interventions. As Principal Investigator of the Women’s Health Research Group, a multidisciplinary group at the College of Medicine at Ibadan, she has led studies on Women’s health, focusing on environmental and occupational determinants of pregnancy outcomes, mental health of women in the perinatal period and work-life balance among rural and urban women. She led the Gender and Health section of  Prof.  Dean Jamieson’s Disease Control Priorities Project at University of Washington collaborating with several international agencies focusing on Women’s health.  She has led several other community-based research projects focusing on Environmental Health, Child Health and Reproductive Health.
