 Brief Biography:

Dr Tinuola Abiodun Adigun had her secondary school education at Queen”s school Ibadan, Oyo State in 1989. She proceeded to University of Ibadan where she obtained her MBBS in 1998. She started her residency training in the Department of Anaesthesia in the year 2001 and obtained diploma in Anaesthesia in 2003 at University of Ibadan. She has one year training for deepening knowledge in Anaesthesia, a scholarship awarded by DAAD at University of Cologne, Cologne Germany in 2015. She was thereafter awarded a fellowship of Medical Postgraduate College of Nigeria (FMCA) in 2007.
She joined the services of University of Ibadan as a lecturer 1 at the Department of Anaesthesia in 2008 and presently she is a senior lecturer and Honorary consultant at University College Hospital. She obtained Masters of Science in Epidemiology and Medical statistics from University of Ibadan in 2019. She assumed the position of head of Department of Anaesthesia in 2021. She is involved in teaching and research and training of medical, dental students and resident doctors in the Department of Anaesthesia.
She is a co-founder of a Pain Action interventional network (PAIN) group, the group is involved in training of doctors in interventional pain medicine.
Her research area of focus is on anaesthesia for neuro-surgical procedures, paediatric neuro-anaesthesia and paediatric general surgical procedures.

RESEARCH FOCUS

My research area of focus is on anaesthesia for neuro-surgical procedures including paediatric neuro-anaesthesia and paediatric general surgery anaesthesia. My contribution to neuro-anaesthesia include the use of local anaesthesia to perform awake craniotomy for patients with supratentorial tumours. This is novel procedure that is used to improve outcome and early discharge in neurosurgical procedures. Head injury is common in our environment, I and my colleague have found out the factors influencing the immediate postoperative outcome in operated head injured patients. This paper has been cited by many authors in neuro-anaesthesia within and outside Africa. Other papers were on intensive care management and outcome of cranial and cervical spinal cord injuries in the intensive care unit presented at the Critical Society of Nigeria conference. The risk factors contributing to mortality and how to reduce mortality in these critically ill patients were highlighted these papers appeared in referred conference proceedings.
My publications in paediatric neuro anaesthesia highlighted the cases done in our environment as the centre is an institute of neurosciences in Africa and a challenging case of anaesthetic management of a child with brain abscess that had congenital heart disease was discussed. My recent research involve giving anaesthesia to children undergoing general surgical procedures especially neonates and infants, and sedating adult and children undergoing procedures outside the theatre. Paediatric endoscopy is a new specialty and these children need sedation. Ketamine is a readily available drug and we use it in our environment to sedate these patients without taking them to theatre thereby reducing cost and increasing safety. Other areas in future is combining ketamine with other anaesthestic agents for maintenance of anaesthesia during general anaesthesia and procedural sedation, as taking out anaesthesia out of theatre is the concern of every anaesthetist.

Title:  Perioperative respiratory care and outcome for patients undergoing high risk abdominal surgery a 2X2 factorial, pragmatic randomized controlled trial across low and middle countries

Funder:  PENGUIN

Brief summary :  The study is a multicentre one to determine the incidence of postoperative pneumonia in patients undergoing midline surgery and to assess whether 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash before surgery versus no mouthwash can reduce the incidence of postoperative pneumonia at 30 days after surgery

Also to assess whether 80-100% fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) versus 21-35% FiO2 during surgery can reduce the incidence of surgical site infection at 30 days after surgery

Role: Co-investigator

Collaborators: Low and middle income countries
