MOTUNRAYO COKER, WINS PRESTIGIOUS L’ORÉAL-UNESCO YOUNG TALENTS FROM SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AWARD FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE 2021

Motunrayo Coker was awarded the prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents from Sub-Saharan Africa Award for Women in Science for 2021.  Motunrayo is a trainee under the Future Leaders African Independent Research (FLAIR) fellowship award of Dr Rufus Akinyemi, a senior research fellow in the Neuroscience and Ageing Research Unit (NARU), Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI). She is registered as a doctoral student in the Cell Biology and Genetics Unit, Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan with her research domiciled in (NARU, IAMRAT, CoMUI under the supervision of Professor A. A. Bakare, Dean, Faculty of Science and Dr. Rufus Akinyemi. The L’Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents from Sub-Saharan Africa Award For Women in Science is conferred yearly to outstanding and promising female African early career researchers based on the quality and potential impact of their research. Her doctoral research explores the contributions of genetic polymorphisms to the development of cognitive impairment following stroke.  Her other mentors are Professors Adesola Ogunniyi (Head of NARU) and Mayowa Owolabi (FLAIR Fellowship Mentor). Motunrayo expressed her gratitude to the immediate past Director of IAMRAT (Professor Catherine Falade) and the Director of IAMRAT (Professor IkeOluwa Ajayi) who have provided an enabling environment for the NARU Laboratory.
