VICTOR FABIAN EDEM WINS THE WEST AFRICAN NOTE-E FOR TB, AIDS AND MALARIA-3 FELLOWSHIP AWARD

On behalf of the Staff, Students and Alumni of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), I congratulate Dr. Victor Fabian Edem, a lecturer in the Department of Immunology for the award of the West African Note-E for TB, AIDS and Malaria-3 Fellowship.  This is an early postdoctoral research fellowship in Childhood TB work package (Tuberculosis Node of Excellence, TB NoE).

The aim of the Childhood TB work package of the WANETAM-3 TB NoE is to improve the diagnosis and management of  TB  in  children  through  the  conduct  of  relevant  multi-country  & interdisciplinary research programmes within national health systems in West Africa.  The project will investigate the added value of urine and other non-sputum-based assays for TB diagnosis in children aged <15 years with presumptive TB, utilizing the established WANETAM multi-country childhood TB research platform. This project will also assess the feasibility and end-user acceptability of urine and other non-sputum-based assays within national health systems in West Africa.

Dr. Edem has just completed an outstanding research thesis titled “Phagocytic mechanism and its plasma modulators in pulmonary tuberculosis patients on anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy and zinc supplement” with the supervision of Professor Olatunbosun Ganiyu Arinola (Head, Department of Immunology). Dr. Edem is also a recipient of the NIH MEPIN-J project on the “Identification of selected genes responsible for susceptibility and resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis among cohorts of Nigerians” also with the mentorship of Professor Arinola.

We congratulate Professor Arinola and the entire Department of Immunology for the excellent mentorship leading to great outcomes including this award for Dr. Edem. We look forward to having this work published in high impact journals and wish Dr. Edem more accolades as he keeps the brilliant work going and growing.
