Dr. Omowumi Moromoke Femi-Akinsotu CoMUI Alumna of the BDS Class of 2004 is President of the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Oyo State Chapter!

On this special day for Dr. Omowumi Moromoke Femi-Akinlosotu, I am delighted to announce that she is the new President of the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Oyo State Chapter. I therefore celebrate Dr. Omowumi Moromoke Femi-Akinlosotu today as she celebrates her birthday and as she takes over from Dr. Oyindamola Selifa Adeyemi, who served from 2021 to 2023.

Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu has now stepped into this role with impressive qualifications as a great alumna of the Nation’s First and Best, graduating Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2004 and rising through the ranks to the position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. She is known for her commitment to excellence and leadership. She is also very passionate about educating and mentoring young girls, and quite involved in many professional organisations.

As Provost, I am delighted to see our institution producing exceptional leaders like Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu who are showing the world what is possible when good leaders are at the helm of affairs. I have full confidence that Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu will continue the great work of her predecessor and lead the MWAN Oyo State Chapter to even greater success.

Even though today is about celebrating Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu, I must quickly add that Dr. Adeyemi did an amazing job during her time, leading MWAN Oyo State Chapter to achieve great milestones. Dr. Oyindamola Selifa Adeyemi was born in Lagos about seven decades ago. She went to school in Lagos and later in the United Kingdom at Virgo Fidelis Convent School. Dr. Adeyemi studied Medicine at Alexandria University in Egypt and graduated in 1982. She worked for ten years in the Oyo State Ministry of Health and then for five years in the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. She also spent five years at home taking care of her family. When she returned home, Dr. Adeyemi and her husband started TZ Hospital in Idi-Ape, Iwo Road, Ibadan, to help people with their healthcare needs.

When I read the MWAN Oyo State Chapter's newsletter publication of their 2021-2023 Biennium activities, I was proud about the successes recorded by her and her team. Dr. Adeyemi was exceptional in advancing women's health and rights. Under her guidance, MWAN Oyo State Chapter conducted numerous impactful initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of women and the girl child in the community. She also led the chapter in organising sensitization visits and outreaches, including a collaborative Medical Outreach with Ask the Paediatricians Foundation to commemorate the 2023 Children's Day Celebrations at Aba Odo, Moniya, Ibadan. She also oversaw events such as a practical demonstration of appropriate handwashing methods and benefits at the UCH Secondary School, Ibadan, in celebration of the 2023 Global Hand Washing Day.

In addition, Dr. Adeyemi played a crucial role in commemorating significant events such as the International Day for Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation at Adeoyo Hospital, Yemetu. She also organized celebrations for International Women's Day, focusing on the theme of gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow at Oyo State Ministry of Health. Under her leadership, the chapter actively participated in promoting breastfeeding awareness during International World Breastfeeding Week at Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan. These initiatives, alongside various other impactful activities, highlight Dr. Adeyemi's stanch devotion to advancing women's health and rights during her tenure.

These are the great antecedents that I believe Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu will build on to ensure the great work of the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Oyo State Chapter shines even brighter.

As Dr. Femi-Akinlosotu adds another year today, it is only fitting to remind her that we are all proud of her and rooting for her to be a great success.

May the Lord help her to do valiantly. Amen
