Researches

EXPERIENCE IN TEACHING AND RESEARCH    

Teaching experience

       Since my assumption as a resident in the department, I have actively participated in teaching my junior colleagues and medical students through different forum such as bed side teaching, journal club meetings, tutorials, departmental scientific meetings and invited lectures for about 5 years. I have also represented my consultants in giving lectures at different forum.

       After my appointment as the hospital consultant, I was also offered an associate lecturer position by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan in 2009. Since, I have been given lectures to medical students in Obstetrics and Gynaecology posting periodically, offer tutorial in the clinic and theatre sessions, and also conduct examinations for them as stipulated by the University regulations.

     Apart from this, I have also conducted teaching sessions for the postgraduates in the department in form of tutorials, appraisal of scientific journals and scientific presentations skills. I have also supervised some in the various approach of teaching methodology. 

       I have been assessing part-1 National Postgraduate Medical College dissertations in the faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the last one year and also, I have given lectures during revision courses for the postgraduate fellowship of both National Postgraduate Medical College and West African College of Surgeons.

     I have facilitated various capacity building training sessions for different cadres of health workers on various range of reproductive health services such as emergency obstetric care service (EOC), cancer screening and family planning sponsored by FMOH, UNFPA, UNICEF, World Bank and WHO.

    At present, I am a member of faculty at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and a honorary consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, University College Hospital, Ibadan. My job description includes: Training of medical students, resident doctors, coordination and conduct of specialised clinic and theatre session in OBGYN.

Research experience

As an individual that have craved for academic excellence, I have participated in many research activities and this has made me publish with almost all the 16 members of the academic staff in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology mostly during my 5-years fellowship training programme. I have attended many research training programmes that have centred on proposal and manuscript writing, research methodology, bioethics, and data analysis including the recently conducted NIH sponsored one that was facilitated by the postgraduate school of the University of Ibadan and Global Health Initiative of the University of Chicago, USA. In addition, I have also mentored by younger colleagues through supervision of their research work, data collection and manuscript writing. 

I have also been trained in use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for conducting epidemiological studies for effective tracking and spatial data analysis.

My postgraduate dissertation proposal won one of the postgraduate student research grant sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Institute of Public Health, Johns Hopkins, Centre for Population and Reproductive Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan for the 2006.

Currently, I am in several research groups both within the University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, Ibadan and neighbouring tertiary health institutions.

Currently my research focus is on Urogynaecology, Gyne-oncology and Reproductive Health especially Family planning.

(a)Completed research works

1.    Community survey on urinary incontinence survey in Ibadan tagged “The Ibadan Urinary incontinence Household survey” – Participate in the design and facilitated the conduct of the study with over 5,000 respondents.

2.    Use of Non-pneumatic Anti-shock Garment (NASG) in the management of Obstetric haemorrhage in Nigeria. It was a multi-centered quasi-experimental trial conducted in Nigeria. I was involved in the supervision of all the centres in Nigeria. The finding of the research has generated interest of international organizations such as WHO and FIGO resulting in their commitment to its incorporation into their policy document.

3.    Assessment of the effect of psycho-social support during childbirth in Ibadan: A randomised controlled trial – Design and coordinated the study

4.    Social Support in Labour, as a catalyst for contraceptive uptake in Nigeria: a Randomised Controlled Trial – participated in the design and coordination of the study

5.    Community survey on the awareness and attitude of women to stillbirth in Ibadan. Designed and coordinated the survey

6.    Retrospective review of the outcome of obstetric fistula at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

7.    Awareness of HPV vaccine use among nursing mothers Ibadan

                                                        

(b)In-progress

1.    Family Health and Wealth Survey – It is 3 year International multi-country level research involving 10 African countries and China, that is been coordinated by the Director of Bill and Melinda Gates Institute, Johns Hopkins University, USA. The research hopes link family wealth with several reproductive health indicators using Global Information System for spatial analysis. I am the assistant project coordinator for the Ibadan group.

2.    Evaluation of the effect of pumpkin leaf on the haematological profile of pregnant women: A multicentered randomized controlled trial. This study aims to evaluate use of supplemental vegetable as a cheap source of iron in the treatment of anaemia in pregnancy. I am part of the research team that developed the concept and wrote the proposal.

3.    The effect of pregnancy and childbirth on the risk of developing non-fistulous urinary incontinence among women: evidence from a randomized controlled trial. It is a multidisciplinary operational research concept

4.    The mental ill health patterns among obstetric fistula patients. It is a multidisciplinary longitudinal study involving psychiatry unit.

Dissertation and Thesis

1.            Views of Pregnant women to social support during labour at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Submitted Obstetric long commentary for part two fellowship examination of the West Africa College of Surgeon, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2007.

2.             Pattern of Obstetric Vesico-vaginal fistula and the outcome of repair at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. . Submitted Gynaecology long commentary for part two fellowship examination of the West Africa College of Surgeon, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2007.

3.            Pattern and Outcome of Chlamydia serology among Infertile women In Ibadan. Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the award of degree of masters of Science in reproductive biology, University of Ibadan 2007.

4.            Assessment of social support in Labour: a randomised controlled trial. Submitted in part fulfilment of the fellowship examination of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College Examination 2007.
