Biography:

Augustine O. Takure is Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Urologist in the department of surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Augustine Takure is a medical graduate from the university of Ibadan (1989). He served aa a National Youth Corper at the University Health Service of University of Ibadan (1991-1992) and was the first Youth Corper to win a National Merit Award at the health services.

Thereafter, he proceeded to the Catholic Hospital in Apomu, Osun State (1992-1993) as a medical officer. He returned to the university of Ibadan health Service hospital (1993), where he rose from a medical Officer to Senior Medical Officer II (January 2001).

Takure A.O., completed his residency training in urology at the Obafemi Awolowo University teaching hospital Ile-Ife in October 2007 and continued as post fellow senior registrar till March 2008. He was appointed as a consultant urologist and honorary lecturer at the Irrua Specialist Teaching hospital and Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma (March 2007 – October 2009). He went for further training in endourology and kidney transplantation in India (July-December 2008).

He returned to his alma-mater as hospital consultant (October 2009 – January 2014). Because of his interest in academics, he was subsequently appointed as Lecturer I in January 2014 and rose to Senior lecturer in October 2017. He applied for Readership in October 2020.

His responsibilities in the department of surgery are coordinator of surgical-pathology meeting, coordinator of objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) till date. He introduced surgical debate into the academic programme of the department of surgery. He performed the first vascular access surgery for haemodialysis access (2010), therapeutic and diagnostic laparoscopy 2015) at the university College hospital respectively and maintained continuous exposure of medical students and surgical training to these surgical skills.

Dr. Augustine Takure has published over 70 articles in peered reviewed journals. His areas of interest are day case urology, urological oncology, renal transplantation, reconstructive urology, vascular access for haemodialysis, laparoscopy and endourology.

He is a member of national and international urological associations namely Association of urological surgeons, Transplant Association Nigeria, Sosiete Internationale d’Urologie, European Association of Urology and American Association of Urology. Among positions he held are Secretary General of both the Association of Urological Surgeons, Nigeria (NAUS) 2017 – 2021 and Transplant Association, Nigeria (TAN) 2015 - 2021, Deputy National Delegate to Societe International d’Urologie (SIU, 2018-2021). Vice-President II (TAN, 2019-2023). Currently Dr. Takure A.O is the President Elect TAN (2023) and NAUS (2023). President of Association of Catholic Medical Practitioner Nigeria Ibadan branch (2021 – 2023). 

Augustine Takure’s hobbies are teaching, reading, listening to jazz music, and travelling.

Research

Current Research and Capacity Building Projects including Grants

1. A Multi-Site Study for the Collection of Surgical Tissue and Blood for Genomics, Proteomics and Biomarker Research (Fresh, Preserved).
Funder: Boca Biolistics.
Brief Summary: This study will involve 200 participants with clinical and histologically confirmed cancers of the prostate, kidney and urinary bladder. Blood samples will be taken at weekly interval over three weeks and tissues from tumour site and natural tissue of affected organ will be taken, stored in the freezer at -70C with tissue blocks obtained. The samples and tissues will be analysed for genomics, proteomics and biomarkers sort for. There is no cost to the patient other than the needle pricks to obtained blood samples. When required longitudinal draws may be taken. Ethical approval No.: UI/EC/22/0281 was obtained before commencement of the study. The study started in September 2023 and to date 10 patients have been enrolled with no side effect recorded.
