Dr. Afieharo Igbibia Michael earned her MBBS degree from the University of Benin in 1999. After the mandatory Internship and National Youth Service she worked as a medical officer at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) Irrua, Edo State for two and half years before commencing her residency training at the University College Hospital Ibadan. She obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 2009 and The National Postgraduate Medical College (FMCS) in 2013. During her residency, she was honored with the German Academic Exchange Service Scholarship Award, spending a year as a clinical fellow at Hannover Medical School, Germany.

Continuing her pursuit of knowledge, she acquired a Masters in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2023. Her professional journey expanded when she became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2019. Initially employed as a consultant Plastic Surgeon at University College Hospital (UCH) in 2011, she later transitioned to an Honourary consultant role in 2019 upon joining the University of Ibadan's faculty, driven by her passion for research, teaching, and mentorship.

At the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Michael spearheads the Clefts and Head and Neck unit. Her research primarily focuses on paediatric plastic surgery, encompassing epidemiology, surgical outcomes research and the paediatric surgical health system, fostering collaborations on local, national, and international research projects.

Her significant research involvement includes leading a Smile Train-funded study on predictors of quality of life improvement post-cleft lip and palate repair surgery in Nigeria and co-investigating a related grant on hearing thresholds in children with cleft palate in Ibadan.

Dr. Michael's accomplishments extend beyond her research endeavors, earning awards such as Best Residents Presentation at the 17th Annual Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (2009), Young Investigator Bronze Prize at the 16th International Society for Burn Injuries Congress (2012), ASPS/PSF International Scholar Program Award recipient (2018), and the American College of Surgeons International Guest Scholar Award (2023).

Actively involved in academia, she serves as the examination coordinator at the Department of Surgery and mentors medical students.
