A Proud Moment for the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Appoints Dr. Temitope Ilori as Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA)

In a noteworthy development for the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), Dr. Temitope Ilori has been appointed as the new Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) by President Bola Tinubu. The appointment was announced in a statement signed by President Tinubu’s media aide, Ajuri Ngelale.

Dr. Ilori is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

The President expects Dr. Ilori to utilise her wealth of experience and expertise in her new role to effectively carry out NACA's mission. This mission involves overseeing the execution of the Strategic National Plan aimed at combating HIV/AIDS/STDs, while also spearheading efforts to secure resources for a robust and enduring response to these health challenges.

NACA's vision is to create a supportive policy environment and ensure ongoing facilitation of proactive multi-sectoral planning, coordinated implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all HIV/AIDS prevention and impact mitigation activities in Nigeria. Its mission is to empower Nigeria as a nation where people possess comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS and offer care and support to individuals, families, and communities affected by the disease. NACA is responsible for facilitating all stakeholder HIV/AIDS activities in the country.

Having excelled in her medical career, Dr. Ilori's appointment is a further confirmation of her dedication to healthcare and policy development. Through her previous appointments as the Commissioner for Health in Osun State and Chairperson of the Osun State Agency on Control of HIV/AIDS, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and a commitment to public health initiatives. This has also been consistent with her impressive academic achievements, including being the best graduating Fellow of the Faculty of Family Medicine, West African College of Physicians.

Personal Profile: Dr. Temitope Ilori

Dr. Temitope Ilori is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and a Consultant Family Physician in the Department of Family Medicine at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Ilori obtained her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan in 2004 and completed her residency training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. She graduated as the best graduating Fellow of the Faculty of Family Medicine, West African College of Physicians in April 2012, winning the A.O. Senbanjo Prize. She is also an Associate Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

Dr. Ilori is a certified nutritionist with Bachelor of Science (BSc. 1997) and Master of Science (MSc. 2018) Degrees in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She is currently a PhD Fellow at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, sponsored by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA). Her areas of research interest include Primary Care, Public Health Nutrition, Non-Communicable Diseases, Women’s, and Child’s health.

She has attended several national and international training programs, including the Leadership Training for Physicians Executives at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, a Practical Financial Management Certificate Course from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Liverpool, UK, and a Leadership and Management Training in Health Course at the University of Washington, USA. She similarly attended a training on Prevention Strategies for Non-Communicable Diseases organized by the University of Oxford and a short course on Food Environments for Healthy Diets Organized by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She has co-authored over 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Dr. Temitope Ilori has been involved in policy formulation and strategic development as the Commissioner for Health, Osun State, Nigeria, from 2011 to 2014, and Chairperson of the Osun State Agency on Control of HIV/AIDS. She also chaired the Osun State Technical Working Group on Immunization.

Dr. Ilori is an excellent team player with desirable leadership qualities who has served as an Executive Member of various professional bodies, including the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA), WONCA Working Party for Women and Family Medicine, Nigerian Medical Association, Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), and Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN). She is a Board of Trustee Member of the Foundation for Care of Mentally Ill (CAREMI), a Patron of the ASIDO Foundation, and a Member of the International AIDS Society (IAS). She currently serves as an Assistant Hall Warden at Alexander Brown Hall, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

Dr. Ilori is the daughter of a former Governor of Osun State and the first interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande. She is happily married and blessed with wonderful children who are excelling in their chosen careers.
