The Infectious Disease Institute, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan as a research programme conducts its activities in the following domains:
Education, Training and Capacity Development
The IDI will be responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in infectious disease as well as pre-service training for all cadres of health managers, health care workers, allied health care workers in resource limited settings. The overall aim in education and training will be to build capacity of health care workers in areas of research, patient care, epidemiology and disease prevention, laboratory services, programming and programme financing. This will naturally lead to strengthening of local health systems in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa.
The Training Programme will be conducted by highly qualified national and international trainers to offer evidence-based training that matched the best training available globally.
Research
The institute will promote, support and conduct research. It will encourage both investigator/institution-initiated researches and industry-sponsored studies with the primary role of providing recommendations for development and management of researches, to offer support services -regulatory compliance, IRB help, internal monitoring, to develop research standard operating procedures (SOPs), and review compliance and progress of all researches in infectious diseases. The institute will encourage clinical trials, Longitudinal Chort researches, Translational researches, Health Economics and Outcomes Researches, etc.
Prevention, Care and Treatment of Infectious Diseases
The institute will continue to provide our HIV infected and affected patients with high quality care and treatment. With the maturing of HIV care in the country the number of patients requiring second- and third-line treatment will gradually increase and the institute will continue to play a significant role as a referral centre within the national referral system both for treatment and innovative researches. This will increase the proportion of more complicated cases and referring stable patients to clinics where we have developed necessary capacity. In addition, the patients care team will provide a holistic site of clinical care and support services to adult and paediatric patients via out-patient specially clinics and ambulatory or day care centre. Outreach
The IDI Outreach Programme's main focus is to provide increased access to quality and comprehensive health services for infectious disease in Nigeria through innovative and strengthened health systems. The Programme uses state and nationwide Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) approach. This involves strengthening strategic infi=ormation systems, supply chain management systems and laboratory services as well as improving human resource capacity through training, membership, onsite support and infrastructural modifications. The Outreach Programme will also support operational research interventions, including public health evaluations to inform policy decisions.
