619TH INAUGURAL LECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, BY PROFESSOR OMOLOLA M. ATALABI DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY

Professor Omolola Mojisola Atalabi is a distinguished Nigerian paediatric radiologist, academic and healthcare leader whose career has significantly advanced medical imaging in Nigeria, across Africa and internationally. Widely respected for her expertise in paediatric radiology, she has spent decades promoting quality imaging practice, specialist training and better health outcomes for children, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Born on 25 January 1958 in Akure, Ondo State, to Pa David Ayodele Daramola Jaiyeoba and Mama Agnes Alaba Daramola, she received her early education in Akure and Oshogbo before attending Fiwasaiye Girls’ Grammar School, Akure. She later studied at Cranley School for Girls in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she earned the Scottish Higher Certificate of Education (1978-1979). Her medical training began at Bendel State University, Ekpoma, before she transferred to the University of Ibadan, where she obtained her MBBS in 1989. After completing her housemanship at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, she specialised in radiology, becoming a Fellow of both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1999. Her fellowship dissertation won the S.B.Lagundoye Best Dissertation Award.

Professor Atalabi joined the Department of Radiology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, as Lecturer Grade I in December 2000, rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2016, and has built an outstanding academic record with more than 85 peer-reviewed publications and contributions to important medical texts and guidelines, including work linked to the World Health Organization. Her research interests include paediatric radiation safety, pneumonia imaging, neonatal radiology, artificial intelligence in low-resource settings, health system strengthening and quality assurance in ionising radiation. Through these contributions, she has helped shape radiology education and practice within Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

Her leadership record is equally impressive. She has served as Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Ibadan, Chairman of the University Ceremonials Committee, Head of Radiology at both the University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, and currently heads the Special Duties Unit at UCH. She also made history as the first female President of the Association of Resident Doctors and later as Chair of the Nigerian Medical Association, Oyo State Branch. In professional circles, she played a major role in establishing paediatric radiology as a recognised subspecialty in West African and Nigeria’s postgraduate medical colleges.

Internationally, Professor Atalabi has earned rare distinction. She became the first African President of the World Federation of Paediatric Imaging (2018-2019) and has served on several influential global bodies, including the ISMRM/WFPI Paediatric MRI Global Network. She is an Honorary Member of both the Society for Paediatric Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, and she was the first Africa-based Assistant Editor of the Journal of Paediatric Radiology. She has also led the African Society of Paediatric Imaging, the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria and founded the Society for Paediatric Imaging in Nigeria, while contributing to imaging capacity development through RAD-AID International.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, she is known as a committed mentor, examiner and capacity builder whose trainees now hold leadership positions in Nigeria and abroad. She is also a devoted Roman Catholic Christian, active in parish service. She is a mother of three biological children, two sons and a daughter, with several adopted children and a proud grandmother of five.
