The University of Ibadan held her first-ever virtual matriculation ceremony for newly admitted students for the 2020/2021 academic session on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 10.00am at the Trenchard Hall of the institution. The University’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor A. B. Ekanola, in his opening remarks, congratulated the matriculants and urged them to imbibe the school’s distinctive traditions and cultures.
While speaking further, Prof. A.B. Ekanola promised the matriculants that they would grow in the confidence and pride of being members of the University of Ibadan community. He declared that they would have such experiences that will crystalize into fun memories and last through their lifetime which by the grace of God will be extraordinary, impactful and fruitful. He informed the gathering that the University of Ibadan, at the moment, has all its programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) fully accredited by the National Universities Commission. He pointed out that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Ibadan has adopted the emergency remote teaching approach to facilitate online teaching and learning. He admitted that although this method comes with challenges, they are not insurmountable.
Following the already set high tempo, the matriculation speaker, Dr Boluwatife Ndidiamaka Ikwunne, a 2020 Young Innovation Leaders Fellow and Winner of the 2021 Rhodes scholarship for West Africa gave her speech. In her address, Dr Ikwunne confidently re-assured the matriculants that they are all capable of greatness, as it lies within them. She reiterated that fortunately, in coming to University of Ibadan, they have found a great place to achieve excellence. Having been in the same place as the matriculants some eight years before, she highlighted some keys that could help them in their journey to success. These keys include purposeful living, perseverance and humility. She emphasized the need to study smart, set goals, practice proper time management, show kindness to self and others while maintaining proper physical, mental and spiritual health. She ended her speech with a quote by the immediate past Vice of Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, and “if it is from the University of Ibadan, it must as a matter of necessity be of the best quality”.
The University Librarian, Dr. Helen O. Komolafe presented an award of excellence to the matriculation speaker, Dr. Boluwatife Ikwunne whom she described as an embodiment of academic excellence worthy of emulation. This was immediately followed by the Matriculation oath taking ceremony which was presided over by the Registrar, University of Ibadan- Mrs Olubunmi Faluyi.
The Provost, College of Medicine, Professor Olayinka. O. Omigbodun was one of the dignitaries present at the event.
