VIII.    Details of Teaching Experience at University Level:

  • a)Undergraduate teaching

Since 1986, on joining the Faculty, I have given formal lectures in Paediatric Cardiology and General Paediatrics.

Paediatric Cardiology:

  • i)Evaluation of the Cardiovascular System - History, Physical Examination, Investigations necessary for evaluation of children suspected of having heart disease.
  • ii)Right to Left Shunting Situations (Cyanotic Congenital Heart Diseases – Fallot’s tetralogy, Transposition of the Great Arteries, Tricuspid Atresia.

iii)     Acquired Heart Diseases – Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease; Infective Endocarditis

I occasionally give:

  • iv)Obstructive lesions – Pulmonary Stenosis, Aortic Stenosis, Coarctation of the Aorta
  • v)Left to Right Shunting Situations – Ventricular Septal Defect, Atrial Septal       Defect, Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

General Paediatrics

I routinely give:

  • vi)Clerking in Paediatrics – History Taking and Physical Examination. This lecture is given to introduce students to the correct way to approach clinical clerking in Paediatrics.

I have in the past given lectures on

vii)         Diptheria, Pertussis and Tetanus 

viii)        Measles.

Clinical Teaching

I conduct clinical teaching on regular basis (weekly) at the bedside, and in the General and Paediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinics. Students present their findings on illustrative patients. Important physical signs are demonstrated, the cases are then discussed and the students graded. 

Social Paediatrics Seminars

Seminars in Social Paediatrics are conducted once a week during the Junior and Senior Paediatrics Postings. During such seminars, the students present their Home Visit experiences to the class. The seminars are presided over on rotational basis by lecturers in the Department.

Grand Rounds

Weekly academic meetings are held at which various clinical topics of interest are discussed. The lecturers take turns to be the lead discussant, along with other members of their various clinical units. The content of such presentations is tailored for the interest of undergraduates, postgraduates and lecturers alike.

Examinations

I participate in all Part IV MB, BS examinations conducted by the College of Medicine. I served as Chairman of the Undergraduate Examinations Committee from   to October 2009.

I have also participated in examinations conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry, as Paediatrics forms a part of their Part IV examinations in Medicine.

I have served as external examiner for Part IV MB, BS examinations to the University of Ife and Ogun State University.

  • b)Postgraduate teaching

I conduct Postgraduate Bedside Teaching Rounds and Postgraduate Seminars for Resident Doctors. Topics covered include various topics in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Cardiology, including congenital and acquired heart diseases and investigative Cardiology. Postgraduate doctors are taught to read and interpret electrocardiograms, and are involved in echocardiography sessions at which definitive diagnoses are made.

  • i)Supervision of Part II FWACP and FNMC(Paed) Dissertations

I have supervised the postgraduate dissertations of the following postgraduate doctors, who successfully defended their dissertations at the final (Part II) examinations of either the National Postgraduate Medical College or the West African College of Physicians:

Paediatric Cardiology

I contributed 4 chapters to the West African College of Physicians, Faculty of Paediatrics Update Course Series 1 - Paediatric Cardiology and Respiratology, which is a 215 page book with 25 chapters, written by 12 contributors drawn from the Faculty of Paediatrics of the West African College of Physicians, as well as from the Faculties of Surgery, Radiology and Anaesthesia of the West African College of Surgeons. Having been reviewed by the then Faculty Internal Assessor, the book was commissioned by the College for use by candidates across the sub-region preparing for the Fellowship Examinations of the College. It is published by Blaze Publications in Lagos.
