Professor Abiodun Olatunbosun Ilesanmi was born on the 24th of December 1953 to the family of Late Pa James Ilesanmi of Obanla Onigbogi family in Ilesha and Late Mama Abigail Ademoreke Olotin of Iloda in Ogotun–Ekiti. He had his early primary education in Ilesa and Lagos. He then proceeded for secondary education at Birch Freeman High School Lagos, where he was appointed School Prefect. He also attended CMS Grammar School (1970-1971), where he was the Chapel Prefect.

In 1972, he pursued his undergraduate education at the University of Benin and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, University of Benin (MBBS) in 1978. After completing his Housemanship and National Youth Service, he worked at St. Nicholas Hospital Lagos from 1980 to 1982. Subsequently, he worked at Catholic Hospital Oluyoro between 1983 and 1986 before moving to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, to complete his residency training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, culminating in the award of Fellow West African College of Surgeons FWACS (1988), Fellow National Postgraduate Medical College FMCOG (1989), and Fellow International College of Surgeons (FICS).

Career Growth, Development & Further Studies

Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi was appointed Lecturer I at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and Honorary Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist by the University College Hospital, Ibadan in 1989.

He pursued further studies at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, as a Rockefeller Post-doctoral fellow in Reproductive Health from 1990 till 1992. Following his exceptional performance, he was awarded the Biotechnology Career fellowship from 1993 to 1995 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA.

He attained the rank of Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology on the 1st of October 1997 and served as Head of Department between 2000-2003. He also served as Faculty Secretary, National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria from 1998-2003.

Not limiting his acquisition of knowledge to the medical field, Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi, obtained a master’s in business administration (MBA) from the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan in 1989. In 2007, he was certified as a PPP specialist by the Institute of Public Private Partnership, Washington DC, USA, and the University of Loughborough in the United Kingdom. He is also a Certified Project Management Professional- PMP®.

Service as Chief Medical Director of Nigeria’s Premier Teaching Hospital

Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi was appointed Chief Medical Director of Nigeria’s Premier Teaching Hospital, the University College Hospital, Ibadan, by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, on the 1st of March 2003, and served in that capacity for eight years (two terms). His tenure witnessed visionary leadership and a paradigm shift towards self-sustenance, improved internally generated revenue, entrepreneurial management, and expansion of clinical services and training through partnerships.

During his tenure, Prof. Ilesanmi demonstrated creative leadership by establishing the University College Hospital Ventures to harness resources and reposition the hospital through increased financial returns. He established the Private Medical Suites to improve financial resources for practitioners and the hospital. He supported the establishment of the first Nuclear Medicine Department in Nigeria and West Africa. He also established the first School of Occupational Nursing in Nigeria and the first Telemedicine Services in Nigeria, among other achievements.

It is on record, that he established the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the UCH, the first of its kind on the West African sub region. This has led to the developed of services, research and capacity development for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health in sub Saharan Africa as the Department has partnered with the Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health in the University of Ibadan.

Prof. Abiodun Ilesanmi improved the facilities at the Dental Units and established Private Dental Services. Historically, he opened the UCH South campus and commenced infrastructural development, including the Akinkugbe Renal Centre, In-Vitro Fertilization Centre building, UCH Guest House, and 69 ensuite flatlets for resident doctors and interns. He encouraged the donation of the Kola Daisi Primary Health care Centre.

Other Areas of Service

He also served in various capacities, including Acting Provost, College of Medicine, Igbinedion University, Okada (2011-2012) and Medical Advisor, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (2013-2016). In 2017, he was appointed by the Federal Government of Nigeria as the Foundation Chairman, National Tertiary Health Institution Standards Committee (NTHISC). He is presently the Deputy Chairman of the Governing Council, Igbinedion University Okada, and Chairman Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Biomedical Engineering and Diagnostic Centre, Abeokuta.

A Man of Diverse Attainments and Great Accomplishments.

With over 70 publications in learned medical journals and contributions to various medical books, Professor Ilesanmi has delivered over 30 public lectures on health-related matters, especially in Health Economics, Health Management, and Administration. He is an alumnus of about nine universities in his quest for knowledge in Health Economics, Administration, and Management. He has received over 100 awards, recognitions, honours, and distinctions, including the Zik Merit Award (2010), President Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award, National Productivity Order of Merit Award (NPOM) (2007) by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Officer of the Order of Niger, Federal Republic of Nigeria (OON) by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (2011), Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) European-America University, Dominican Republic (2009). He is a Fellow of over 20 Professional bodies, including the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (1989), West African College of Surgeons (1989), International College of Surgeons (1997), Nigerian Institute of Management (2005), and Institute of Public Administration of Ghana (2006), among others. He has also been honoured with several chieftaincy titles, including the Osi Balogun Basegun of Ibadan land (Oyo State), Otunba of Isotun, and Otunba of Ilesha in Ijesha land (Osun state).

Professor Abiodun Ilesanmi is married with children and grandchildren who have all come to celebrate and felicitate with him on his attainment of this landmark milestone of 70 years and retirement from active service.
